Sick Of All The Noise

Although I pretty much never get angry, I do get annoyed easily. My list of pet peeves far exceeds the length V. Carlton would walk to just see/hold you. So since it’s Monday, I’ll discuss my musical pet peeves (in both songs and music videos)!

LAUGHING

I’ve gotten a little bit less annoyed at this, but I used to HATE when singers would laugh in their songs. I’m not even sure why it bothers me though… Lots of my favorite singers do it, like Michelle Branch, P!nk, Avril, Ke$ha, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift, etc. But I guess one reason I don’t like it is because I prefer crying over laughing (or sad music over happy music). I also feel like it just comes across as corny. You’re supposed to believe (I think) that the artist naturally let out a laugh while recording in the studio, but it seems fake to me.

TALKING

I only hate talking in some songs. I don't mind when P!nk quickly snaps "You're going home alone, aren't you?" before her chorus ONCE. But I get annoyed when a song is carried by talking and not in a clever way. For example, although I lurve me some Ke$ha lately, "Tik Tok" is one of my least favorite songs of hers because she talks too much (she sings on the rest of the record). I also always hated Shania Twain's "That Don't Impress Me Much" because of the part before the chorus when she says something that is supposed to be funny ("OK, so you're a rocket scientist"). ANNOYING.

RANDOM BACK-UP SINGER CHORUSES

I never understood this. A singer (usually who isn’t that good) sings the verse of the song, but when the chorus comes on, you hear some random women singing. I always assume that the volume levels were not done correctly since MAYBE the real singer is in there somewhere, but come on, these people often pay big $$$ for producers and mixers, etc., who should know how to make sure the singer is heard on his/her own chorus! If you aren’t aware of this strange phenomenom,

PRETENTIOUS POP STARS

As for music videos….

BREAKING TO TALK

Yes, I’m looking at you, Lindsay Lohan! I hate when the music suddenly stops (or is decreased in volume) in music videos so that some peepz can have a convo I don’t care about. Unless it’s specifically being a long-form video (so that it has a better chance at winning a Grammy), find a creative way to tell a story without dimming the music.
(P.S. I couldn't find a pic that made sense for this topic, so I just used my favorite pic of the Lohan sisters!)

TOUR MONTAGE VIDEOS

Did you ever get an e-mail notification that your favorite music artist uploaded a new video to YouTube? You eagerly click on the link hoping the video will feature guest appearances, sweet dancing, an exciting plot, NOT random talking, etc. But then the video is just a montage of live performances even though the CD version of the track is playing… annoying! I understand that maybe this is the cheaper route, but it’s also boring and played out.

What are some of your musical pet peeves??

I hate is when they turn pop music into light jazz/muzak. I also think that auto-tune has become a whole lot less impressive since Cher did it in "Believe" (a hundred years before you were born).

It seems like random back-up singer choruses were created so that the star can add an ad lib solo over the chorus (aka simulate an orgasm).

I also hate tour montage videos. If I'm going to watch an official music video, I want to see something more than what the average fan can upload to YouTube.

All I know is that "someone needs to rap off-in-off the top!" Oh, and "I was like, why are you so obsessed with me?" I can't help, "I like when people talk in the beginning of songs...I think it's kinda rad!"

Music videos? They still make those? How do you see them? MTV hasn't shown a video since you were in diapers, punkin. THAT is my musical pet peeve. It called Music Television, why the HELL don't they MUSIC and not some insipid, retarded, pointless reality show filled with people that any sensible person would want to slap silly?

HUGS...

I HATE when singers feel compelled to say their name constantly throughout the song, like I might not know who's singing so they'll tell me every other verse so I can run to itunes and buy their album. Ugh. I don't want to hear you randomly throwing out your name which makes no sense in the song. Rant over.

Well I also hate when songs are edited to take out the bad words. Of course that only usually comes to light for me when something like American Top 40 is on because in Canada we just let the f-words fly if they are in the song. Even the word sex. Birthday sex turns into birthday shhhh. Huh WTF is that? But that's not the singer's fault I guess.

Note to self: Do not get between Tam and her birthday shhhh.

Polt: MTV does still show music videos, they just also have other programs as well. Usually during the day and late at night they play music vidz.

Jere: OmG, I forgot Cher used autotune all those years ago!

Ryan: It's especially disappointed in the video I posted for The Fray, since they actually use their YouTube account all the time and update with tour videos. I guess if it has a bunch of behind the scenes stuff, then that's kind of cool... maybe. Or not.

Josh: Of course MC can talk whenever she wants! And unless you're quoting "Over," keep L. Lo's mediocre CD to yourself. lulz. (And of course the title is a reference to K. Osbourne!)

Polt: OK gramps, MTV does play music videos! But it's probably when you're at work (afternoon) or after you fall asleep (after 10pm). They also have their sister networks (MTV2 and MTV Hits) which play music most of the time.

Tam: I know what you mean! That can be annoying. The only time I LURVE it is in "Don't Forget About Us" by Mariah Carey! "I bet she can't do it like me! / She'll never be MC!"

Val: Can't live without cha, can't breathe without cha, I'm dreaming 'bout cha!

A wise move Ryan and wise move. ;-)

I also hate it when they add a "hidden" track by either making a lot of silent tracks or by padding the last track with a lot of silence before the final song. It completely screws up my ability to listen to the CD normally.

Ryan: I HATE THAT!!! It totally complicates my last.fm play count! Have I really listened to "Chivas" as many times as "Irvine" (feat. several minutes of silence between the two songs on the SAME TRACK)?!?!

I agree with Tam. Unnecessary self reference in a song turns me off.

I don't think I spend much time thinking about what I don't like in certain songs. I usually just avoid song's I don't like and don't think about them much.

I agree with you on the talking thing. Stop asking me "Are you ready?" Britney. I'm ready. Just sing the song already.

Polt -- boy you really walked into that "gramps" thing. :-) Heh heh. And btw: I watch all my music videos on Youtube. I agree with you about the reality tv. Especially the "slap silly" part. Though it's hard to imagine ANY amount of slapping could make any of those people sillier than they already are.

Jere -- I agree that the auto-tune thing (which I first heard on "Believe", like you) is overdone now. But I still love it when Fergie does it in BEP's "I Gotta Feeling".

Back in the 80s my pet peeve with music was what I used to call the "extended boredom mix". When a good pop tune would be turned into some great extended single which I would be stupid enough to buy, only to discover that it was just filled out by a lot of repetitive boring beat and nothing worth listening to. :P

I have about 90% of the same peeves when it comes to music. Specifically the laughing. It creeps me out - like at the end of Senorita by Justin Timberlake and he goes "that's it" and then laughs? Scary.
